Break your way in part 3 (D6 LM Budai Combat)

Post by GM Yuusha » Sat Jan 22, 2022 7:06 am

Your lance is to attack the south eastern defences of Budai. It's late morning and intercepted communications suggest the enemy are relaxed. They aren't expecting us. Two turrets have been sighted, although one is hidden in the north-west. They're supported by two heavier tanks and a mech. While the turrets will be slow coming online, they pose a real threat. Expect their foundations to be reinforced. Destroy the enemy so more Obsidian Angels can penetrate directly into the facility further up in the hills.

Objective: Defeat the enemy.

"We are moving in on the turret position," Easy said over comms, "Get ready ladies. Safeties off; we are clear to engage."

"Fuck yeah!" Tango cheered.

"Save it for when you shoot something down, rookie," Sierra chastised, "You have to earn it."

Using the trees for cover, Ezmeralda gets her lance wonderfully close before sensors detect an enemy mech powering up. The turrets were not online yet.

Image

Up ahead was a Striker tank with a Partisan heavy tank further north. They'd have to watch out for all those AC/5s. A PPC turret occupied the hill nearby. There was a dual SRM6 turret somewhere north of it according to scouting reports. More immediately pressing was the Hunchback turning to face their position.

"Sierra hit the fire support, Foxtrot bounce up there and lay down some PPCs on the Striker, I'll assist," she said moving forward, "Tango soften up that turret. Take it slow and line up your shots. Make good use of them needing to get moving."

The enemy vehicles and mech were slow to move, but not to open fire. No warning was given. They sighted the closest mech, Ezmeralda's Hunchback, and let rip. Thankfully they're not the best marksmen. The mech is hit by multiple autocannon shells and LRMs (15 damage LT, 3 damage CT), reducing its sturdy left torso armour to only enough protection to prevent a medium laser blast from penetrating. The enemy Hunchback's AC/10 shot sails far over Easy's head, landing somewhere in the trees to her south. Pathetic.

In response, the lance track targets and open fire. Sierra lands all her weapons fire, her AC/10 and LRMs doing respectable damage to the Partisan (10 damage RS, 5 damage FR, minor damage, +1 to driving skill rolls, 1 damage RS). Foxtrot misses the Striker with her PPC, but Easy makes up for it with a solid laser hit (5 damage RR, moderate damage, +2 to driving skill rolls, -1MP). Much more surprising is Tango. Sure, she misses the broad side of a barn with her SRMs, but her large laser strikes true on the PPC turret. So true that it clips the PPC casing, melting through it and jamming the weapon! (4 damage, critical, PPC jams).

(Panther and Commando on 1 heat)

Image

One turret was already crippled. It was a good start. In a panic, the Striker tries to reverse out of the danger zone. The Partisan is more cautious, going hull down in the defences as its allied Hunchback heroically stomps forward to try to slow the Angels' assault.

"Nice shooting! Give the SRM turret space and we'll leave it for last," She shook her head after all the impacts to her left, "Sierra finish that tank off. Fox, Tango trash the turret. I'm going to put some hurt on their hunchy."

The assault was going well. Startled or frightened, the Striker continued to miss and this infected the Partisan's crew, causing them to also miss! The Hunchback clipped Ez's own Hunchback with its autocannon and a medium laser (10 damage CT, 5 damage RL). Not a big deal yet. She had armour to spare.

The enemy Hunchback soon finds itself without armour to spare as Easy tags it with all her weapons (20 damage RT, 5 damage LL, 5 damage CT). It falls over a second later (5 damage RA). Sierra misses the hunkering Partisan this time as Foxtrot and Tango lay waste to the turret. Their weapons fire batters the crew until they're finally vaporised by Tango's large laser (lots of damage, crew killed!).

(Hunchback and Centurion on 1 heat, Panther and Commando on 5)

Image

The enemy Hunchback struggles to get up (5 damage CT), but it does manage on its second try. The Partisan remains hull down as the Striker struggles to reverse uphill. Somewhere further away the lance's mechs would each pick up another turret coming online.

Tango let out a howl over comms as her laser cut through the turret control room, "Ba-bams!"

"Good work kid!" Easy said as she charged the other Hunchback with intent to kill, "Sierra keep on that tank. Tango, Fox; Show that striker what the stakes are. Maybe they'll run."

Ez's lance became easier targets as they slowed. The Partisan rained down AC/5 shells on the Centurion, which was staying at a weapons range that suited it (5 damage LA, LL, CT). At least it hadn't shot the Commando, thanks to the Centurion absorbing its attention, or the light mech might have been in trouble. The Panther is hit across its entire body by LRM and SRM fire from the Striker in the same few seconds (5 damage RL, 1 damage LT, 2 damage LA, RA, LT). It was still standing, but that had stripped some armour. However, much more damage is suffered by Ezmeralda who chooses to try finishing off her fellow Hunchback pilot all on her own. She ought to know better than anyone not to underestimate a Hunchback. Disdaining heat, the pilot fires everything at her as she does the same in kind. Her mech is bathed in fire. Only quick thinking prevents her arm taking more serious damage. Some of her mech now has exposed internal structure (10 damage CT, 5 damage LT, RA, LL, LA, RT, 1 edge used to reroll a critical). She fights hard to remain standing.

All the hits on her mech badly throw off her small laser and AC/20 aim. The massive shell falls to the ground harmlessly. Ez does land her medium lasers (5 damage LL, RA), but that's all. The Centurion only lands a few LRMs on the Partisan's turret (4 damage TU) while the Panther plants a PPC blast squarely in the Striker's front armour (10 damage FR).

To add insult to injury, or perhaps further injury to injury, the Hunchback then kicks Ez's mech, crunching through the armour and damaging the central internal structure (10 damage CT, 9 internal structure remaining). At least it didn't hit anything important. Ez keeps the mech upright once again. The only positive was that the enemy mech was now visibly hot.

(Centurion and Panther on 2 heat, Hunchback on 3 heat, Commando on 4)

Image

The Hunchback puts it back up against the unmanned turret. It still wants to fight. The Striker climbs the hill for a better view of its targets, feeling emboldened by the damage done to the enemy, as the Partisan remains right where it is.

As Ez moves around the turret she swaps targets for the Striker. Her targeting systems locked on the light tank with absolute precision and she blasts it apart with all her weapons (destroyed!). Although the Panther misses the 4H, the Commando claps it hard with its large laser. This takes out its AC/10 (8 damage RT, AC/10 crit). Finally, the Centurion lands its AC/10 on the Partisan (10 damage TU) and LRMs on the Striker (8 damage LS, minor damage, +1 to driving skill rolls) causing some minor damage.

In return, the Partisan lands a single AC/5 on the closing Centurion (5 damage LA) and the Striker hit it with some LRMs (6 damage RA). It also hit Easy's Hunchie with SRMs (2 damage RA, LA, CT, 7 internal structure remaining). She really starts to sweat as her warning alarms sound. The 4H clips the Panther's right leg, reducing the armour there to next to nil (5 damage RL).

(Hunchback on 6 heat, Centurion and Commando on 3, Panther on 2)

With the Striker destroyed the Hunchback tries to head north to protect the Partisan. It only manages to do so at a slow pace.

Damage to Ez's lance is fortunately low for the next few seconds of combat. The Panther takes some fire, but nothing it couldn't handle (5 damage LA, CT).

Ez gets some revenge on the Hunchback as she lands an AC/20 hit on its arm and a small laser on its rear (20 damage LA, armour destroyed, 3 damage LTR). The Centurion lands a medium laser on the Partisan's exposed turret (5 damage TU). The Panther and Commando both miss. Somehow the enemy Hunchback remains on its feet. That's fine. It gives Ez a chance to punch it. She slams both fists into it, one even smashing ferro-glass around the enemy's cockpit (5 damage LTR, armour destroyed, critical hit, heat sink taken out, 5 damage HD, 1 pilot hit).

A little ways to the north the Centurion fails to connect with the Partisan. A shame. The Commando had more luck as it kicks the damn thing's turret (5 damage TU, armour destroyed, critical hit on AC/5).

(Hunchback and Commando on 2 heat, Centurion on 1)

Image

Battered and bruised, the crew of the Partisan bail. The Hunchback, now all alone, attempts to flee northwards to the protection of the remaining turret.

It was as though the enemy Hunchback pilot heard Ez's last remark. In one last act of spite she blasts the Panther with a medium laser (5 damage to RT) and then one right into Ez's mech. Ez fires at the same time and there are two giant explosions a second later as the ammunition in each mech explodes (no edge left to reroll! 5 damage LT, 100 damage from AC/20 ammo exploding... mech destroyed. Auto-eject is engaged and succeeds. Ez takes 2 pilot hits).

The enemy similarly goes up in smoke (20 damage LA, section destroyed, 16 damage transfers to LTR, 3 critical hits, 100 damage from AC/10 ammo exploding. Pilot blacks out with 3 total hits, but auto-eject works. Mech destroyed). Tango's shot hits a piece of the Hunchback's arm as it falls to the ground.

(Commando on 1 heat)

Ez lands safely in the remains of her cockpit seat. She feels painful and uncomfortably hot from the explosion. At least she still had her neurohelmet.

[Strength will be lowered by 0.3]

Only the turret was left.

The Panther jumps into a good spot for PPC fire. The takes out one of the two SRM-6 launchers. The crew, now all alone, quickly flee into the safety of the emplacement building. They'd surrender and be captured within fifteen minutes.

(All enemies eliminated! Congratulations!)

Tango finds the bloody, bruised and ever slightly crisp Ezmeralda nearby. She'd need some days on the mend, but she would be fine. The other Hunchback pilot was found unconscious and bleeding profusely. A bullet had punctured her side. She was, however, alive. Just as stubborn as her mech then. A medic team arrive with infantry to secure the site, take hostages and keep her alive. Naturally, Ezmeralda gets priority treatment too, albeit mostly painkillers and plastiflesh patches. More thorough and lasting treatment could be done back at the dropsite.

Hours later both Hunchbacks would be declared a write off. There were a few bits the mechtechs could use, such as arms and legs, but the main body, gyro and engine of each were utterly destroyed. The PPC from the turret and the Partisan could be salvaged at least. It would be a drop in the ocean compared to the cost of losing Ez's mech however.

The only silver lining was that all three other mechs would only need their armour replaced and their ammo replenished before they were ready to be deployed again.
