The newbie mechwarrior had probably doomed the whole table with her cackling. The dealer won the next round. And the next. And the one after that.

By the end only Cat was left with any tokens. Her thirty minutes was up.

"You both were doing so well too... until someone jinxed you."

Laks gives Cat and Ez a friendly pat on the shoulder. "Maybe next year? Or..." She smiled wide. "Maybe you'll have to ask me to take you. You know, using my nice Captain salary and bonuses."

Being the only one with tokens left does come as a surprise to Catherine. "Huh? How'd that happen?"

Not that it really matters in the end, since a handful of chips won't do her any good really. Oh well.

"Jinx or not, lets make sure the year ends on a high note and we have fun next year?" She laughs. "Careful Laks. You know I'll gladly take you up on that offer. I'm shameless like that."

"Well, that was amusing. Can the dealer win the prize?" she asked tossing her last cards away.

The dealer had the good sense to look a little embarrassed at Ez's comment. It was bad luck.
