Chase Down the Convoy 2 (D12 LA Ninovo Combat)

Your lance is rapidly moving north from east of Ninovo to try cutting off the escape of a convoy of flatbed trucks. There is apparently another leaving the Supply base, but this group must have slipped away earlier in the confusion of the air assault from Arnad. It's fortunate that a friendly aerospace fighter called them in. There's no time to waste. Watch out for those escorts however!

Objective: Seize the goods on the four flatbed trucks: For each truck that is beyond destroyed or escapes, Impact will be lowered by 0.1. You can attempt to shoot the trucks, but the safest way to ensure their surrender is a melee attack.

"Mother f--" Lights Out started to complain when the Kindergarten was ordered to intercept/chase down this convoy that had somehow snuck out between the Angels' assault elements.

"Lights! I get it, alright? But we got this," Gianna soothed, mostly for the sake of Princess, who she didn't want feeling like her Wyvern and its jump jets were the only chance of succeeding in the mission.

"Angel base, Angel base, this is Trooper 1 Leader, do you copy?" Gianna was already putting a plan into motion as she and her lance mates stomped northward as quickly as they could.

"Angel base here. What's up Make It?"

With a slight roll of her eyes at the callsign she still hated, Gianna replied crisply, "I bet some snooty FedCom bastards would love to show us how to catch these escaping trucks, right? Can you clear it with Eric or our Lyran friend in a hell of a hurry? Priority one from Lt. Rains, commanding Trooper Company," she finishes in her official voice, which she rarely used with anyone.

"Copy that, Make It. Angel base out."

"You really think we need FedCom help, Gianna?" Spare was getting slightly ahead of the others thanks to the speed of his Dragon, but he wasn't pushing anything.

"Need? Probably not," Gianna says honestly. "But better we ask for help and not risk the mission on being more proud than smart."

The lance moves north toward the main road, intent on catching the fleeing convoy. As they get eyes on it they receive a communication and a new 'allied' blip on their maps.

"Sergeant Otto approaching in the Grasshopper due west of your location. I have been ordered to assist you."

Gianna's lance would, if they were swift, cut off the convoy's direct escape route, but it could divert over the grass instead. It was made up of an LRM20 toting Hunter light tank, a Manticore with its deadly PPC guarding the rear, an SRM variant Goblin and a single Vedette. The four trucks were being kept in the middle of the group.

Spotting the mechs, the two rear guards move to engage as the rest start to speed up along the road.

"Otto, if you can flank those nasty tanks and get them off our backs there's a date with Lights Out in it for you," Gianna suggests as the Kindergarten presses forward to try to head off the convoy.

"Make It!" the redhead in the Cyclops calls defensively into the comms. Then, after a moment. "I mean, I'm not ruling it out or anything..."

"We got this, Kinders!" the lance leader calls, watching as her team mates execute her strategy. "Let's light up those damn tanks!"

The advancing Hunter has Gi's mech at optimum range so it lets rip. LRMs crash into the heavy mech forcing Gianna to take evasive action. Unbeknownst to her, her quick thinking saves the mech from a missile hitting a weak spot in the armour protection (10 damage RT, 5 damage RA, 1 damage LT, both edge used, 0 edge left). The Vedette misses the Crusader while the Manticore focuses on the scary assault mech dead ahead (10 damage RT, 5 damage CT, 1 damage LA).

Lights Out returns fire, hitting the Manticore with most of her weapons, including a gauss slug (29 damage FR, critical hit - sensors hit, 1 damage LS, minor damage, +1 to driving skill rolls). Make It follows up with LRM hits to the Manticore (5 damage FR, 3 damage TU). Her SRMs are fired at the Vedette as a secondary target. It was much less threatening. Even so, the tank is neutralised by just three missiles (6 damage RS, moderate damage, +2 to driving skill rolls, -1MP, engine destroyed, immobile). Just to be sure, the Dragon hits it with a few rounds (10 damage RS, 1 damage RR, heavy damage twice...). Princess misses her shots.

Surprised by the offer over comms, Sergeant Otto performs some terrible shooting at the Manticore, missing it repeatedly. The Hunter is at least hit for some damage (8 damage RS).

The trucks speed on, moving toward a small village the highway cut through. Their escort, an SRM Goblin, diverts to buy them time. The Manticore also charges ahead as the Hunter stops to track targets.

"Go kick that damn thing if you have to, Otto!" yells a clearly frustrated Gianna, the lance leader clearly having underestimated how perfectly straight in front of the Hunter she had Gorgeous George standing. "A little help, Lights?!"

The unintentionally daring lieutenant feels a little relief as the Cyclops stomps forward to help and she turns to head off the trucks.

The combat was rapidly intensifying. The next few seconds were frantic. The Hunter hits Gianna's mech with a few LRMs (5 damage RA, 4 damage RT). Her right side was beginning to look vulnerable. The Manticore focused Princess' mech, as it was at a good range, hitting it with its PPC (10 damage LL). Then the Goblin fired wave after wave of missiles at the medium mech (8 damage CT, 4 damage RA, 2 damage RT, LT, LA, HD, 1 pilot hit). Princess is cut on her arm as the cockpit takes a missile hit. However, that wasn't the end of her woes. She loses control of the mech and it takes a little more damage to its left arm (5 damage LA). She'd not be able to attack the truck now.

In the west, the Grasshopper destroys the Hunter's engine, neutralising it. It switches position soon after. Lights Out in the Cyclops shoots the Hunter as well, but the vehicle absorbs the blow. It still wouldn't be going anywhere. She also hits the Manticore with two SRMs (2 damage RS, TU).

Gianna also focuses the Manticore. Her medium laser in particular does heavy damage (5 damage FR, heavy damage, +3 to driving skill rolls, 1/2 MP). Some of her SRMs hit the Goblin, giving it a taste of its own evil medicine (12 damage FR). Finally, the Goblin also takes a blast from the Wyvern's large laser before it falls (8 damage LS).

Both the Crusader and Dragon miss their melee targets. With Princess on the floor the trucks had more of a chance to escape now...

The trucks continue moving along the road. One zooms up to the turn, preparing to do a brief skip across country. The Manticore and Goblin struggle to defend the rear of the convoy.

The Kindergarten's attack plan started to unravel as the trucks started to slip away, but Gianna kept a mostly clear head even as Princess and Maggie toppled over.

"You got this, Princess, just stand Maggie back up and blast that Goblin!"

Princess' luck holds out as she gets up and somehow avoids being hit by over twenty SRMs fired between the Goblin and Manticore. Only a few machine gun bursts tickle her mech's right torso (2 damage RT).

Most of Gianna's lance fires at the Goblin to neutralise it. It is unsurprisingly Lights Out that gets the kill shot, although the Wyvern, Dragon and Crusader softening it up certainly helped!

The Manticore is battered by the Grasshopper and finally kicked into submission. Gi misses her kick on one of the trucks however, so there were still four trying to escape.

The Manticore crew surrender and all that's left is the trucks. Unable to drive safely through the woods, the three trucks behind the Dragon struggle to get past it. Result!

However, there was one that would soon manage to escape...

Sensing their impending demise unless they surrendered, three of the trucks switch off their engines. It was only that last one to stop.

Gianna sees the situation and rapidly talks herself out of just opening up on the last truck.

"Stop the trucks. Stop the trucks," she mutters to herself. Then, with a deep breath, she says into the comms, "You've got this Spare. You and that Dragon are gonna go catch our fleeing lamb, so get to it!"

Nodding silently in his cockpit, the tall man turns and brings his mech to a full run, coolly pursuing their final target...

Spare was feeling pressured. He chases the truck and tries his best to stomp out a rear tyre, but the truck swerved just enough to avoid it. He could blast it at any moment, but he sticks to the mission parameters. There was one last chance as the vehicle moved to speed up again along a straight road heading northeast. He sweeps his Dragon's leg and...

Hit!

The vehicle is kicked to the side of the road. All four trucks were down. Phew.

((All objectives completed! Congratulations!)

Badly shaken, the driver takes a while to step out with his hands up. An Angels APC arrives a quarter of an hour later to help secure the prisoners of war and the goods. Mech weapons components, spare gyros, a few actuators; they'd all be useful.
