John nodded. "Such habits do tend to start as kids. For me it was working on the dairy farm. Moving around equipment and working in the stock room, I got used to manual labor. Now I don't feel right if I don't work out most days," he says with a nod. "Becomes almost a ritual."

"Was working on a farm peaceful? I have walked through them but never stopped to experience one."

Yoko DID head over to the treadmill as the others talked, not terribly far away with the limited onboard space. She responded as she set it up for her preferred settings, "I'd love to skip working out if I thought I could get away with it. Just naturally stay in shape... Not in any danger of becoming 'pudgy' anytime soon, but I never did have much of an appetite for sweets or such."

"No, you appear to be roughly 12% underweight given your expected height. You are fortunate to not have an appetite for such things. I used to eat to attempt to find happiness. But that is not how happiness works."

Her temple gave a throb of irritation at the mention of her weight, but she held her tongue. Not like ut was the first time she'd been told something like that though, so she took it in stride. The underweight part, not the eating for happiness part.

The weight stuff went over his head. He wasn't here to make friends, flirt or make people feel better about themselves. Was all about the workout for him.

"So you primarily do cardio then?" he asks Yoko. Maybe we can run together sometime. Even numbered days are cardio if you ever feel up to it."

"I used to do cheerleading and dance, back in the day. So I guess my focus has always been on practical exercise for that kind of thing. I'm not sure I'll need it for my work here with the Angels, but it doesn't hurt to keep up old routines I think. Don't want to end up out of shape or out of breath when it counts; Always be prepared, that's my motto."

"Lot's of boring overhead to worry about when you run a farm, but it can be fun outside of that."

"Buy a dairy farm? That's certainly not the kind of ambition I would expect from a mech pilot, certainly. Even if it can be satisfying for some people, it's certainly nkt very action-packed or exciting I imagine. A lot of routine for little reward."

He pauses in the middle of a tricep extensions, takes a deep breath, then continues.

"...after I left Solaris. But it's the kind of thing a person could retire to."

"I like routine, it is soothing. Knowing what to do, when to do it and how it must be done is ideal. I would live my life by a stricter routine if I could. I am not a mechwarrior who pursues adrenlaine. I originally served my nation, now it facilitates resolving a personal matter."

Yoko chuckled as she started walking on the moving treadmill, a slow start to warm up with before both literally and figuratively ramping things up.

"Adequate is about right for me. We had workers and grandma knew the ins and outs better'n me," he says with a shrug.

"Any retirement plans for either of you?"

"I am unsure, if I cannot return to the Combine I might wish to find a nice part of the Free Worlds League to settle in. I might write my memoirs. I am told my works are like a technical manual, so I believe I have the necessary talent."

"Well, I've only ever read technical manuals, so I'd read it," he says with a nod.

"I'd probably skip it then myself. I don't do well reading more dry or technical stuff. Definitely avoided those sorts of classes in school and went with... shortcuts for book assignments."

"School? Didn't even finish honestly. Was working on the farm full time when I turned fifteen," he admits. "Ended up getting some more education on Solaris though. Things I needed for piloting."

Yoko nodded to John before turning to Yori, still keeping the speed low on the treadmill asshe walked and talked, "What about you, Miss Hakamada. Did you have full schooling back in the Combine then?"

She waits a few moments until intuiting more was needed.
“The Dieron District Gymnasium. A smaller school and reasonably liberal. But they were willing to accept someone like myself who would otherwise have struggled to find training.”

"Would have taken you for the type to be trained in an apprenticeship, rather than a formal education, given your callsign. I'm sure you were a great student," he says with a nod, before putting up the weights so he could move on to the next exercise.

"How about you? Formal training for communications? That analyst and encryption stuff?" he asks Yoko after cleaning up one set of barbells and grabbing a different set alongside Lawrence.

"I know Lawrence here was with Pandora College, so he's got formal warrior training too," he replies.

A soft snort of deridement came from Yoko as she started slowly raising the incline on the treadmill.

"I went to Shin Amoro Daigaku, a large campus general university. All I really got out of my time there I think was debt. Still, I remember being told I should be proud they were willing to give me professional training at the time."
