"Wise man. I would agree with that. It's also the universal standard. Once you stop following all Terran traditions and norms you may as well be in the deep periphery." He tapped the table with a big smile. "Besides, it's fun. We do something each year's end. Brings people together and gives them something to look forward to."

[Aleksandr Korolov]

"Ya keeps us all on the same page ya know? Alex, or I guess his father, is right." Alek said agreeing with the Major.

"Gotta balance traditions with advancing. Keeps us connected to our humanity and culture. I still celebrate the historic Russian holiday Victory Day in May because my father taught us to. Traditions can be very important."

[Mei-Ling Zhou]

Mei didn't have much to say about traditions, most thought the Capellan traditions were weird or cruel.

She leaned over to Alex.

"By the way I love your hair. I've always wanted to grow mine out but I worry about it getting in the way of my helmet, do you ever have that problem?"

[Eric Voelker]

"We should be finishing up come May. I'll bring you something nice Alek." The year before it had been a fine bottle of vodka. What would it be this time?

Eric enjoyed some of his meal while the topic of hair was discussed. When an opportunity presented itself he'd ask the question he had for Mei. "So, what special occasions do you observe Mei-Ling?" He turned the focus back on the newcomer, who he was genuinely curious about. "You've only been with us for a short while so there's lots to learn."

Alex looked at the pony tail. "Hair net and pins that don't interfere with the neural interface." Alex explained. "You should try it or get some removable extensions. They would look lovely on you."

"Cool I think I will try to find some the next time we hit a port."

“Umm, well we don’t really celebrate a lot; not as much as I have seen since leaving the CC.

Religion isn’t outlawed but it isn't really a big thing back home so we don’t observe any holy days like some.

The biggest holiday is probably Worker’s Day, where everyone who is a citizen and most servitors have the day off. People usually go have picnics or have family cookouts and there are always fireworks and the People’s Freedom Song plays on a loop on one of the government channels.

New years is big of course but a lot tamer than what I expect to see tonight although my parents threw some blowouts back in the day.”

Eric scratched his cheek as he leaned back. "Worker's Day huh? There are other former Capellans on ship. I'm sure they'd enjoy celebrating Worker's Day. You have my approval to put on something if you like. Tessa Wentworth can probably even find some room in the budget for it." He couldn't do more than that, but hopefully it'd make the newcomer feel a little more welcome.

[Mei-Ling Zhou]

"I doubt any of them miss it given all the special days the rest of the galaxy has. Though an early August BBQ could be a fun so I won't dissuade you." She said with a bright smile, clearly more in love with the idea than she was letting on.

[Alex Kovac]

"A BBQ sounds like fun. Specially if we get to a nice planet with the perfect weather for it." Alex smiled.

[Eric Voelker]

"Csesztreg might not be that unless there is a warm spell, but a BBQ would be nice." He twirled some bacon around on his fork. "I haven't had a good grilled steak in forever."

[Mei-Ling Zhou]

"That could be fun, maybe me and my fellow Capellans can whip up some traditional dishes for people to try out. We would need to really prepare for that, we're going to need a lot of soy sauce. What about you Alex, I'm not even sure where you are from sorry to say but what do your people celebrate?"

[Eric Voelker]

"Have a guess." There was a Germanic aspect to his pronunciation. Definitely Lyran origins. The Major popped the bacon into his mouth and chewed, eyes on Mei-Ling and showing some curiosity.

"No? Well, no matter."

Eric finished up his breakfast.

"Enjoy the day people. It's the last of '49."

He got up to return his tray and to then head back to his office.
