Goals and Mini-Goals

Goals
Characters active during the final session of the game (Days 13-18) will will be allowed personal goals to work on after the game's conclusion. All characters will have one Goal.
In general, specific and narrower goals will be more easily achievable than wider, more abstract ones. E.g. Trying to persuade the CO to let you pilot an assault mech is going to be more achievable than trying to start up your own pirate kingdom. In regards to achievability, I will look at each character and the goal provided for them, their record in the game, their character sheet and possibly other details before deciding how successful the goal is. Some may be fully accomplished, others partially and some failed. Additionally, character goals may have greater effects than those intended. Please try not to be too vague when giving goals or you may find they are not accomplished - you won't necessarily be asked for clarification. I will try to answer questions as you are deciding on your goals, however. Such questions should be posted in your PF.
You can post a thread in your PFs with this goal on the last in character day (Day 18) or later. Try to limit each to no more than a paragraph (~200 words each maximum please), though you may find shorter is sweeter. Feel free to describe just what you want to achieve for your goal and how your character will go about it. This may include why it might be successful, what would support it, what obstacles there might be and how these would be overcome, etc. Players will not have to list this for all goals, and some things can be assumed to be automatically successful, such as leaving the unit to return home safely or selling your mech and retiring. You can also assume your character stays in shape, continues to ply their trade, remains solvent, avoids being murdered, etc.
Examples of Goals would be:
• Arranging a marriage (will require Goals from both characters involved if two player characters are marrying)
• Upgrading or customising your mech
• Trying to strike it rich somehow, such as through gambling or selling something you've acquired
• Trading your mech for another, which may involve the unit purchasing you a new mech to use
• Seeking a promotion or change of duty
• Devoted training of a group of underlings to increase their skills and ability
• Affecting other characters (whether something generally involving them, or assisting other PCs with their goals)
• Performing grand undertakings i.e. Things that take time to achieve, such as starting a business or defeating a famous pirate or sworn enemy
• Investigating into something or conducting new research
• Making new contacts, gaining favours or obligations, perhaps blackmail
• Personal development and training beyond the norm
• Attempting to start something new within the unit, like a covert operations company
• Switching employer to someone else, such as a House Military or another mercenary unit
• Retiring!
These are examples and there is some overlap. Do think about your goals and whether they best represent what you want from your character's future. Also, do note that if there will be a future game, it will likely be tied to the Obsidian Angels.
Finally, goals may be Advantaged or Disadvantaged. This affects their likelihood of success and how great that success is. In other words, if you attempt a Goal that is Advantaged, then you're more likely to achieve it and you can expect good results.
Mini-Goals
After Day 12 there will be down time for just over a month. Characters will be able to use this time to achieve a mini-goal. These are like Goals, but smaller in scope and much more time sensitive.
Examples are below. Your Mini-Goal should be put in your PF. Please also ask there if you have any questions.
Examples of Mini-Goals would be:
• Upgrading your mech (Switching to DHS), small customisations (switching a PPC for a large laser and two medium lasers) or changing mech variant (switching your mech for another established chassis that currently exists or has existed historically). Complete customisation generally isn't possible -> That would require a Goal
• Doing something on the side to earn some money
• Investigating something on planet
• Negotiating with the enemy over something
• Making a new Connection from among the game's cast or increasing an existing Connection's devotion
• Seeking a promotion if you haven't already been promoted
• Trying to address a flaw in your character (working off a disadvantage)
• Trying to develop a new strength in your character (working toward a new advantage)
• Recruiting locals into the unit, whether soldiers, mechwarrior trainees or support staff
• Increasing contact with a local group to your own benefit or that of the Angels
• Spying on the enemy or someone else, or otherwise trying to covertly gather information on something
• Training a particular underling to make them especially capable
Your chosen Mini-Goal should be in your PF by the 23rd February.
