John was warming up at the heavy bag. Not throwing full punches, but just tapping it in a repeating pattern. It was sparring day and he was ready to provide some lessons.

Yoko walked in, covering a yawn with one hand and carrying a duffelbag with her other. She'd been unsure what to wear for sparring; It wasn't as if general clothing mattered much for going to the shooting range, but she suspected it did much more so here. For now she wore a muted pastel yellow sweatshirt with a cartoon chick on it and black, tight workout pants. She gave Butcher a wave after the yawn passed, "G'morning. I'm not too early, I hope."

"No such thing as too early. For me at least," he replies, continuing the pattern.

"Gotta warm up the muscles first. Do what you want for that for a couple minutes."

John leaves the heavy bag and moves to the mat nearby and does some arm rotations.

"Sleep well?"

[Yoko Lee]

"Fine, yeah. A pretty quiet, uneventful night. Which was a blessing. Sometimes I like staying up late for reading or listening to stuff, drinking... but sometimes it's nice just curling up on the top bunk and pretending no one else exists to worry about."

Since she was invited to, she set down her bag some place and started stretching, using a chair like a ballet dancer might.

He does some light jogging in place for a bit.

"That's good. Rest is important for exercise recovery and prep. They got you in a bunk room?"

[Yoko Lee]

That got a short guffaw, "Of course. I'm an adjunct to the comms officer; You don't think they put people like me in their own rooms, do you? No, I'm sharing a room with a nurse-tech named Lisa Meadows. Older woman, fairly quiet. I try to not disturb her in turn. Thank the kami for headphones..."

"That... sucks. I've seen her. Friendly enough."

He stops the jogging in place and feels warmed up.

"Let me know when you are ready."

[Yoko Lee]

"Oh, I have no complaints about her, no. We just don't have much in common is all. She's a noble from Commonwealth space who didn't need to join up with mercs but decided to after being widowed. And I'm just dirt poor gutter trash from the Combine who joined up for the C-Bills."

She shook her head and stretched her arms behind her head, one after the other, as she walked away from the chair, "Ready enough, I suppose. I've been doing my own research into things and reading up and such, so hopefully that means I'm not insultingly clueless to your instruction here."

A small smirk.

"Two very different lives... Well, let's start with takedowns," he says.

John goes through the steps, showing her how to shoot and take down, the basic move to get into a controlling position. He proceeds step by step, moving in to demonstrate on her. He assumes that her presence at wrestling practice means she's okay with the contact.

If anything, unfortunately, Yoko seems a bit stiff and hesitant, but still does her best to comply. Fortunately, despite that, she's not sore or inflexible, so it's not painful. But Butcher doesn't need to be too deep a thinker to know that she seems mentally uncomfortable with being held.

He finishes the demonstration then moves back to a ready position.

"Alright, you're next. You got this. I'll guide you through it," he says, giving verbal instructions to help guide her through.

The fact Butcher didn't say anything was kind of comforting, especially since Yoko was trying her best here. She trusted him, at least enough, and trusted the Angels as an organization were above such issues anyways. Standing up straight she nodded, "I mean, I'll try my best. I'll admit, feels like I'd really need surprise to get this to work on someone not being so... patient."

[John Slaktare]

"For now you will. But it's like any other skill. Gotta practice it to become familiar with the movements. It will get easier and quicker. And even when you're just beginning like this you'll still have an edge over folks that know nothing. And most folks know nothing. Now, step by step..."

John readies himself to guide her through step by step a few times.

[Yoko Lee]

It was a fair enough statement and Yoko followed along with Butcher's instructions, feeling the weight and grip of things. She was thin enough but not too thin, and seemed to have a sort of strength enough about her from someone used to looking after herself at least, even if not trained to do so. Yoko's discomfort was less when she was the one practicing rather than being shown, probably because she was more in control of things.

Butcher suggests a few corrections, as normal for someone just starting out. After a few slow motion practices, he starts explaining the following step of taking the opponent down with a trip.

"I'm gonna show you how it feels once. We'll learn the steps after that and move on to you practicing tripping me."

[Yoko Lee]

Yoko nodded, rubbing her wrists as they took a short break. It wasn't as if she'd been hurt, but this was definitely working the muscles in her wrists and had a bit of the sensation of being held by them too.

"...you've not taught anyone this stuff before, have you? You're very business-like about it. Not that that's a bad thing. Just something I'm noticing."

[John Slaktare]

"I have taught some to other folks. Just basics like the stuff I'm showing you. And I tend to be business-like most of the time."

He goes slowly through the trip move, telegraphing every step so Yoko won't miss anything. He then starts teaching and guiding her through the steps while having her mirror his movements.

Yoko doesn't egg Butcher on anymore, going through the steps and paying attention to each step carefully. Yoko is a quick learner on things like this, even if she's a backwater yokel from a food world. Soon she's able to do it on her own.

"Okay, so I do it like that then make sure to take advantage immediately after they're on the ground. I suppose I'd actually prefer that sort of scenario to actually breaking someone's arm anyways."

[John Slaktare]

"Well, there's one more step after this for getting the arm. You could stop here and just start throwing punches. Or pull a weapon if you got one. But most of the time you prolly don't have a weapon or don't want to use it if you're wrestling. The arm bar I'm gonna show you will hold em in place or, if you want, make sure they can't fight."

Butcher has her practice the trip on him, letting her get as comfortable as she can with it.

Yoko nodded a little and followed the instructions. It made sense just in theory, but actually getting it done was more specific than she would have thought. And she couldn't imagine it if the larger man had actually been fighting back. But she saw the use, and if it was instinctual one could pull it off really quickly.
