Butcher is sitting on the floor with his feet up and leaning back in the air, making a V shape with his body. He has a 50 lb dumbbell in his hands that he holds in front of himself. Sweat drips from his face and streams to his shirt.

Not having been working out for however long Butcher had, Mary made her own way into the practice arena. She couldn't help note the struggles that Butcher was enduring alone. It seemed...fitting. He often seemed to be carrying a heavy weight in solitude and silence.

She started her own workout. It was an ongoing part of her physical therapy. She had come a long way since the day her mech exploded all about her. Yet it was important to work out every day to keep the muscles from backsliding.

John holds his position for a bit longer before lowering the weight to his side. He recognizes Mary from her frequent PT sessions. The new Gunny gives her a small wave as he stands, cleaning the dumbbell and putting it back.

"How's it going?" he asks as he lies on the mat preparing to do some sort of crunch.

Mary had heard that Butcher had gotten a bump up for his performance, but he didn't seem like the type to suddenly want a bunch of yes sirs and nosir.....but then again it was a new situation, who knows how he'd take it?

"lance has been doing well. meeting all our objectives and everyone walking home. righty especially. has been doing really well. pushing himself a bit too hard maybe, but he's come through well each time. if he keeps doing well without dying, he'll have his own lance sooner rather than later." she said her voice always quiet. Smoking was bad for you, but it didn't hold a candle to being smoked.

"and yourself?"

Lifting his head and holding his legs about six inches from the floor, he strains slightly as he talks.

"Same. Lance is doing good. Took some damage during the first assault. I think Winkey is already ready for his own lance, but they gave him to me as backup if I do something stupid."

"How's your PT going? Need a hand with anything?"

Mary was always somewhat hesitate to let people get very close to her, but she also always trust in the strength of her fellow Angels.

"it's always hard, but it's necessary. sure, it's always better to work with a partner to encourage you past the walls you think are there to get to the walls that are actually there. have something specific in mind?" she responded.

"What were you working today?" Butcher asks, continuing to hold his form.

"Flexibility, strength, targeting any specific areas?"

Mary considered that.

"i do a lot of flexibility training, but i've been wanting to add more strength training to the mix. maybe starting with the core? she suggested.

She definitely couldn't handle the kind of weight Butcher could, but he was at least qualified to train in that.

"All right. We can start with some simple bodyweight exercises," he suggests.

"Planks up first." John moves to position and waits for Mary to do the same before starting.

Being a mechwarrior, following orders was simple enough. Mary moved into position ready for her instructor to begin.

"Start," John says, starting the exercise, supporting his weight on his forearms. His body was solid, stable and unmoving. He was apparently comfortable with the position.

"How did things go for you yesterday?"

Mary was definitely not as easily stable as her trainer, but she wasn't anywhere near expressing discomfort yet.

She frowned a bit at the question.

"not particularly memorable. the rest of the lance did fairly well for bragging rights but not much for me. we all did come together to bring down the behemoth as a team and we all came home, so it's foolish to wish for more glory for myself."

Foolish, and yet it wasn't particularly satisfying to Mary to miss a lot in combat, regardless of the outcome.

He holds the position comfortably, a bit of sweat starting up again since he already had it going earlier.

"Ain't foolish. We all got our reasons for doing this. Good that everyone came back, sure. I get disappointed in my own performance all the time though. Just motivation to train and do better. And sometimes it's just an off day, which I'm guessing is prolly the case for you."

The excercise was definitely easier on Mary's side that hadn't once been horribly burned...but that was the point of physical therapy, to strengthen the part that had been horribly damaged.

"it is, but even on your best day, you should be motivated to train and do better, even if you're just trying to beat your own best.

She turns slightly, the bionic eye focusing on John with a slight whrring sound.

"but maybe my perspective is skewed. i've seen what a truly bad day can be and that keeps driving me forward. second chances are a wonderful thing, but there is often not a third." she says, which was somewhat a motto for her lance.

"Nah, I definitely always work on gettin better at stuff. But when we drop the ball it's extra incentive cause it shows us the weaknesses we gotta work on. And a failure every once in a while reminds us to not skip training day too," he says, returning her look.

"Second chances can be rare enough on their own. Good that you got one."
