It begins (D1 LE Practice Range)

"I'm much happier as a mechwarrior. Ground pounders have a much rougher job, aye." She agrees with John once the firing stops. Her attention is mostly on Yori's quite impressive shooting however.

"That seemed plenty acceptable to me Lieutenant. I'd work on making that your normal level of performance if I were you."

(Not that it would have changed your roll Yori, but ranged weapons are fired with dexterity )

[John Slaktare]

He nods in agreement with Monique. "Tighter grouping is a better shooting. Anyone can compensate for placement."

He inspects his weapon and goes through reload procedure.

Towards the Sergeant Major. "Well, you certainly keep battle ready. Seen you working in the gym a good amount. Think your there prolly as often as me."

[Yori Hakamada]

Yori nods very seriously, estimating the sergeant major dolled out compliments 72% less frequently than the median Obsidian Angels officer.

"I will endeavor to do so. I hope that by increasing my range time by a suitable amount I can improve my shooting to where that is the norm."

Looking over to Butcher
"Yes, and Sergeant Slaktare is in the gym extremely frequently impl- you may have already grasped his meaning. I am not in the gym frequently, but I have been attempting to increase my own muscle mass."

"I like the gym." She admits.

Yori receives a nod in acknowledgement of her intention to commit more time to the range. Monique would believe it when she saw it.

The usually quiet space was getting to be quite chatty. More than what the Sergeant Major enjoyed. Rather than waste money on firing another magazine of SMG rounds she leaves the post and starts the disassembly process.

[John Slaktare]

He doesn't try to convince her to stay. Instead, he just offers something that he'll be able to as Gunnery Sergeant. "Next range visit's on me, right? I'll close it down for maintenance."

He looks to Yori. "Ain't no implication. Said what I meant. Count the number of times you thought I implied something when we spoke. If the number you got was higher than zero it's wrong."

He stepped up to the post.

"Firing."

He doesn't shoot immediately. Instead, he spends time firing each round slowly.

"Clear."

There are a few awkward moments as Yori stands there and does her best to replay every single line from Butcher in her head and analyse it for implications. Unfortunately, the sheer amount of data is too much even for Yori as she just stares off into the distance.

"I cannot, but I apologise if I implied...you implied. I also try not to imply."
Bowing to the two of them once her finishes shooting.
"I should leave to allow you two some privacy."
She said, managing to imply again.
"Thank you for this time, I hope to see you on the range again."

Monique actually chuckled a bit. "I'd like that, but it had better be your pay Sergeant." She wouldn't like it if he was already planning on abusing his privileges before he was even in post.

She packs up the SMG as she responds to Yori. "No need for that Lieutenant. Stay and get in some more practice. Cannae get better without it."

[John Slaktare]

"Course it will. I'll probably still be paying for my own. Habit," he says with a shrug.

He looks to Yori. "Yeah. Hang out with me, get some practice."

[Yori Hakamada]

Yori salutes Monique

"Very well, I will not leave the range until I have achieved a statistically significant increase in my accuracy which will in turn slightly increase your respect for me."
Turning back to Butcher
"Also Sergeant, I will probably have to try and consistently shoot better than you. I am unsure of my odds."

[Monique McConnel]

"Very good." She actually smiles. Her mental image of John was now firmly one that followed his own ways.

Monique packs away her pistol too, but Yori receives a salute when she's done.

"Evening."

She leaves the pair to it.

"Evening, Sergeant Major," he says as she heads out.

"Like I said, you already shoot better than me. Your grouping is better. Adjusting your placement on a target is easier than developing the muscle memory and technique for good grouping. I've got manuals and had training, but you have more experience and skill I'm guessing. I focused on hand to hand, rather than shooting."

He inspects then reloads once more.

"Evening, Sergeant Major," he says as she heads out.

"Like I said, you already shoot better than me. Your grouping is better. Adjusting your placement on a target is easier than developing the muscle memory and technique for good grouping. "It is likely I have shot more people, yes. Perhaps that explains the discrepancy. But I am sure you have struck more people with your fists."
Looking back at the targets.
"I would enjoy shooting some more with you Sergeant, I appreciate you communicate directly."

"Yeah. Always welcome to join me: here in the gym or on the mat. Never hurts to have someone to practice with," he replies.

"And I prefer talking straight and taking people at their word. Nobody else here's as literal as you though. You got a," he pauses as he replaces steel trap with something that isn't an analogy, "...a great memory. Good at math too. It's real helpful for the unit I think."

He steps back to the post and waits for Yori to join him.

Yori steps up, face blank as she tries to think of some compliments in return.
"You work hard and encourage others, that is also helpful for the unit. Also you wash clothes and cleanup which I personally appreciate."

"Prolly not gonna be doing much washing anymore. I'm guessing the Gunnery Sergeant position's gonna keep me busy."

He thinks for a moment. Hmm...

And then it comes to him. A sterile straightforward question that will help him understand her better.

"Id like you to share what you think is most important for me to know about you, lieutenant."

"Id like you to share what you think is most important for me to know about you, lieutenant."

Yori lowers her weapon for a moment.
"That is a reasonable question. I will condense it into a five point list for ease of remembrance."
Clearing her throat and then continuing on neutrally.

"1. I have difficulty understand people's emotional state and disposition.
2. I feel emotions and am not, as Takemada implied at the Academy 'a creepy robot girl'
3. I take my work very seriously.
4. I take my duties to my friends and my enemies very seriously.
5. I feel that given the effort and thought I have put into my life, my current position and happiness are lower than expected."

Looking over at Butcher
"Do you have a similar list I can reference?"

"First, I react violently to being insulted sometimes... well, most times. Second, I take work very seriously. Third, I like to be active and do physical labor. Fourth, I ain't afraid to speak my mind if you ask me anything. Fifth, I don't like when people get in my when when trying to do something."

He inspects his weapon once more.

"And if you're ever wondering what I'm feeling and can't tell, you can just ask."

Yori pulls out her commpad and jots all this down, taking a moment to underline 'react violent'.
"That is a good list, I shall work on memorising it over the coming days Sergeant Slaktare. In comparing our two lists I believe we can achieve a successful working relationship provided I do not inadvertently trigger a violent response."

Raising her own weapon
"Firing."
Yori keeps to her steady shot-pause-shot-pause routine, working on improving her grouping to her previous standard.
"Clear. Would you be willing to inform me of when I might have insulted you or gotten in your way to give me an attempt to resolve that situation?"

He nods. "I been trying to do that more lately. But you probably won't insult me unless you're trying. Though if it happens I'm probably not gonna be thinking straight, so no promises. But then, that's a good way to get myself in a ton of trouble, picking fights with officers."

"Ah...that is good. People sometimes react negatively around me and it can be hard to tell why. For example, I appear to never give the right answer when someone asks how a piece of clothing makes them look."
Yori actually shrugs slightly, clearly this is a long running and painful subject.

"I am glad you are not picking fights with officers. That rarely ends well unless you intend to lead a mutiny and kill most of them."
