It begins (D1 LE Practice Range)

[John Slaktare]

"O-nine-hundred confirmed," he affirms.

John didn't have the visceral reaction to the suggestion that Monique did. He agreed that a firing range wasn't really the place for levity. Though he didn't find any of the situations suggested to be particularly objectionable otherwise.

But, he somehow suspected she might have been listing things based on some weird qualifier rather than joking. She was odd in that way.

"Firing range ain't a good place for any of that," he replied to Yori. "Only good for one thing."

He stepped up to the post but waited a moment before moving to firing position for the Sergeant Major to fire off her rounds.

Yori looks between the two for a few moments before pausing and mentally rewinding the conversation in her head even as Monique begins to fire.

"Apologies, I was overly enthusiastic with my greeting and violated proper decorum."
Very seriously she salutes first Monique and then John.

"I will endeavour to improve myself. Allow me to start now."
Pause
"Good shooting Sergeant Major."

Monique had fired her shots with only a slight pause in between each. That worked out well for her, as everything connected. One even hit dead centre. She nodded a bit as she noticed.

"Clear."

It was John's turn. The loud firing would soon prompt Yori to protect her ears. If she was smart.

Monique stepped back and lifted out her right ear protection to better hear Yori. "Don't be a kiss ass Lieutenant. Do you want the plate?" She thumbed the post behind herself.

"Firing."

The grouping improved slightly and the was technically closer to the target, but he was now on the right side which meant an overcompensation. He readjusts his stance spending a moment there to get a feel for it. Then he finally stepped away.

"Clear."

He moved to inspect and reload just like before.

"I don't think she means to kiss your ass Sergeant Major. She probably did some math for your grouping and previous qualification results you've had or something. She likes me 3% more than she otherwise would if I had never done her laundry when working the laundry room."

He seems dead serious about it.

"Sergeant Slaktare is correct, your grouping improved by 0.5%-1.5%. If it had become looser I would have informed you."
Yori feels like Butcher understands her as she pushes a set of pink foam earplugs in and steps up to the plate, bringing the target in to 25 metres before slowly loading her weapon and then bracing herself.

"Firing"
Bang.Bang.Bang

Yori fires centre mass with her group, waiting a second between each trigger pull as she stares unblinking at the target.

The Sergeant Major mentally conceded that Butcher was probably right. Nevertheless, Yori needed to work on her people skills. "You sound like a damn machine Hakamada. Work on that when you're done, would you?" Pot, kettle, black.

Monique watched the shots as Yori took them. It wasn't bad. With the other woman using the post she moved to give her revolver some quick maintenance before putting it away. She clicks open her other case. It held a disassembled SMG. She sits down by the far wall to begin putting it together.

Watching her pull the SMG out, he glances at it. "What model do you use?"

He otherwise waits with his pistol for Yori to clear.

The Sergeant Major mentally conceded that Butcher was probably right. Nevertheless, Yori needed to work on her people skills. "You sound like a damn machine Hakamada. Work on that when you're done, would you?" Pot, kettle, black.

"Acknowledged Sergeant Major."
Yori replied, demonstrating just how far there clearly was to go.

Watching her pull the SMG out, he glances at it. "What model do you use?"

He otherwise waits with his pistol for Yori to clear.

Yori fires her last round and clicks the weapon open to let the shells tumble out.
"Clear."
She also looks over at the SMG with interest.

She shifted to the left so John could get a better look. After a moment she names it. "Imperator 2894A1. The longer range over most SMGs is an advantage. It has good stopping power too."

Seeing Yori also take an interest Monique frowns a bit. It was show and tell she realised. "Give me a minute." She shifted back, turning to it and working quickly to complete the assembly. She ensured the safety was on before hefting it and smacking in a loaded magazine.

"It's loaded." She states, just in case it wasn't obvious. She indicates the safety and how to eject and return the magazine into place. It is then offered out to them if they wish to get a feel. "It's on the heavier side and it has some kick, but Imperator make good weapons. Neither drawback is a problem for me." It wasn't said arrogantly. It was just a fact. She was a big woman.

John actually hadn't been intending to get the full demo. He wondered if she decided to do so because of Yori, but she'd probably memorized specs for active Imperator models.

He usually wasn't the type to handle other people's hardware. But Monique was offering after going through the explanation. She'd be even more annoyed if she'd done it for no reason. So he holsters his revolver and accepted the proffered SMG.

He wasn't trained with heavier weapons than pistols, so it was not the most natural feeling in the world. But he applied universal weapon safety. After his short inspection he handed it back.

"Weight feels decent to me. Sturdy and reliable are the key words I look for in equipment," he says.

"Imagine I'm gonna be getting more familiar moving forward."

"You are considerably larger than normal."
Pause
"That was not intended to be kissing ass. Thank you for showing us your weapon, I believe it is very efficient at what it does. Have you had much call to use one in the field?"

She nods at John's statements
"You are reasonably large, I am sure you could efficiently use such a weapon with appropriate training. I am slightly smaller than average and so will retain the use of a sidearm."

"I expect so Sergeant. The Major's pretty good with pistols if you're looking for pointers." She says after accepting back her weapon. "He doesn't visit the range much these days though."

Yori's statements are acknowledged with a slight nod. She set the SMG in her lap after removing the magazine. "I've only had to once. That was before I signed up."

"Hyup." Grabbing her gun and magazine, she pushed herself up. "Each to their own. I'm taking the plate." Monique moved past to occupy the right post.

"Do you have an estimate on the current state of the armory, Lieutenant Hakamada?" He's curious if shed read the inventory. Just a wild guess that she might have.

Butcher made room for Monique to get up and go to the post, by taking himself to the left one. He draws the revolver, inspects it, but waits on the Sergeant Major to go uninterrupted.

Yori goes to reply but whatever she says is mostly lost in the DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA so the sentence is just

"Of course, as per the day we landed our armory was stocked with:"
Yori's eyes glaze over as she repeats a long...long list of the various pieces of equipment she'd read on the manifest.
"-And also some more unconventional devices from Hrafnhildur which I was unable to categorise."

The SMG is indeed much more continuously loud than any sidearm. Monique keeps slightly adjusting her aim in between each burst. They were steadily denting the target and the rear wall. Good thing it was reinforced. There was a reason firearms were restricted on nearly all the rest of the ship.

She stops at the end, smokey powder drifting up from the SMG's hot muzzle, to check her performance.

"Clear."

"Thanks. Appreciate the information. Gives me a good idea of what I'm working with," he replies to Yori.

"Firing."

The group is now orbiting the middle of the target as he fires off each shot. Still not tight, but definitely enough to kill any unarmored enemy.

"Clear."

He looks to the Sergeant Major's target. "I'll need to practice quite a bit to catch up with that. Your burst grouping is tighter than I get with a pistol, taking my time. A good goal to work toward."

"In the event of direct combat I believe I know two of the individuals I will be sheltering behind. Would it be possible to test my shooting against your two metrics? I would like to know how far I need to improve so I may set some performance goals over the coming months."

[Monique McConnel]

Monique popped off her ear protection and shook her head. "I've had more practice with it than my sidearm, that's all aye. I started my military career as a footslogger."

She steps to the side, ejecting the spent magazine and blowing the remains of the smoke away. Cradling the SMG in one arm, she offers the post to Yori with the other. "Show us what you've got Lieutenant."

John moves to join Monique in watching Yori. "It's a rough job from what I've seen. Infantry have to deal with a lot of shit we don't. Don't envy it, but I respect it. Plus, they got a lot of good hand to hand folks to spar with."

[Yori Hakamada]

"Indeed, you may watch momentarily."
Yori steps forward and loads her weapon before checking the target is clear then firing a very deliberate series of six shots all clustered reasonably close together but not with the precision of the sergeant.

"Clear"
She peers through her glasses before taking out a small notebook and jotting down the locations in a notebook which appears to feature one huge column of scores flowing across several pages.
"Hmmm, no noticeable loss of accuracy due to downtime, but room remains for improvement. 4/7."
She steps back from the plate, checks her weapon again and then holsters it.
