"Maybe better off road? I've heard of mechs slipping easily on concrete due to the lack of friction. That true?" Lia was enjoying the ride.

"Oh, mechs handle hills exceptionally well," she said stomping up the hill, "Most combat vehicles can barely move through this sort of terrain and here we are pushing through it easy enough."

The swaying and bouncing about did get more pronounced. "It isn't the smoothest ride though."

"Er, right! Even so, it's kind of fun." Lia was rocking with the movements too. No sign of getting queasy. "How do the sensors work?"

She grinned. "Good, you are handling the motion well."

"Most of the sensor data is in the heads up display inside the neurohelmet," she pointed at one of the monitors, "A detailed read out is here. It is more useful while scouting but once you are shooting the little bit of data you get in this corner of the display will get you by." She gestured just above her left brow.

"Right, but, err, how does it work? Does it have a certain range and you need to face a target to get a reading? What causes the system to tell you there's an energy nearby or a mech powering up?"

"It is partially heat signature. Nuclear reactor engines run noticeably hot," she said trying to remember how the thing worked, "A lot of it is fed from the command center. I used to work with a company that had a mobile HQ that they'd break out for major offenses and the difference on the display is amazing. All kinds of improved data, prior warnings on how rough terrain is, the HQ can offer up suggested pathing on the display... just swank old tech. Most of the time though you are running on the onboard sensors which is some radar, some targeting optics of varying quality, thermal cams and telescoping lenses unless someone bought cheap crap." She runs through her options and frowns, "Like this militia refit we are in? Crap resolution on the viewfinder mode. Good enough to find center mass on a target for the large laser but shit for scouting."

"Did you pick that up through experience or was that taught?" She asks, absolutely focused on following along and learning all she could.

"First company I was with kept bouncing me around on assorted mechs. I got a good feel for what things do," she shrugged, "You notice when the kit is crap, too."

"Neat. Erm, what made you want to be a mechwarrior anyway? You come across as really confident." She hesitated before asking. "Were you always that way?"

"I got into it in the academy. The Combine is always looking for more mechwarriors so middle school had a mech club where you could try out on simulators and the teacher sends the data along to ween out the candidates for further development," she said doing a quick check of the sensors, "I don't think I started confident but I have been muddling about with giant robots since I was fourteen in some way or another. So you know, practice makes perfect."

"Cliff coming up. Hold on for a jump. More a calculated hop than the other though," she said moving forward.
