The lance is back in town (D3, EA, Mechbay, Open/Expecting)

Post by Richard Winter » Sun Jan 16, 2022 12:46 am

Richard was saying goodbye to his Lance. They had recently arrived and brought their mechs in for a checkup and repairs. Especially the Spider had taken many hits and somewhere Richard could hear a mechtech swearing. He had sat down on a barrel, he was topless and his cooling vest was next to him. The Vulcan had become quite hot and the mech had continued to smolder for a while.
He had also had a pack of ice put on his prosthesis. It was very useful, but it had its downsides to have a piece of metal stuck to his body.
He was typing on his Vidphone shortly

"Well now now. I knew it would only be a matter of time before I started seein' you mech pilots in here after those successful outins'. These mechs of yours are still smokin' in here, Two Leut Richie. Luckily these are cold days around here, everything should cool down soon enough then I can go crawlin' over each one lookin' for the smallest cracks." Hrafna had walked up with a smile and an apron of tools at her waist. The coveralls she wore had to be cuffed many times at the arms and legs in order for them to fit the petite engineer, soon they might even make them in her size. Her hair was pulled back into a braid and her skin had yet to be married by mech grease and grime.

"Good to have you and your lance back."

"Ahh, greetings!" he said, greeting the little mechtech. "You could almost say we're changing shifts, huh?"

He looked toward the spider. "Unfortunately, the lightest of us made a small mistake, I hope this won't be too much trouble?"

"Trouble? Nah, this will just take some time is all. Nothin' we can't get back up. Better to have everyone back here and take a little drill bit more time on repairs I say. Yeah, yeah. Save the mech and all that but that's not the sayin' where I'm from. Nope. Too bad I wasn't here when you came right through those doors otherwise I would have offered you the customary welcome back hug. Yup, a good welcome back like back home. Still can I suppose if you are up for it. Never too late of course."

Hrafna rolled her sleeves up just a little more and tucked a few loose strands of hair behind her ears. "Might need a cooling unit for that bit of hardware you go there. Hmm...that's not a bad idea." Out if the chest pocket of her coveralls came a small notebook and pen. She thought for a few seconds in how to word it before righting it down. "I can sketch out some ideas more later but it all starts with an idea. How you feelin'?"

"Um,." He was a bit overwhelmed by the energetic technician. "Yeah, uh sure"
He took the ice pack from his arm and placed it on a barrel beside him, stood up and looked at Hrafna, who was a whole head shorter than Richard, and hugged her briefly.

"You're welcome to take a closer look at it, too, though it takes a few touches to separate the arm from the conncetor." He presented his mechanical arm. He had no idea if a cooling unit could be built into it, or if that would destroy the arm, but apparently Hrafna was having fun thinking about it and was in a good mood, so he wouldn't worry too much about it now.

"There we go now. Welcome back, Two Leut Richie. Glad to have you here with us again." The hug was brief but she was happy to be a part of it. Back home, when someone was gone for a while, they'd always be welcomed back with a hug. This way no matter what that person had been through they knew the comfort home could provide. Even if she could bring a little if that here that would be good with her.

"Look at that now." Timidly Hrafna placed a hand on the prosthesis. Not sure if it can be done without adding too much weight and bulk, buuuut it sure is fun to try an work it out. I wonder..." Her eyes traveled over his arm and the gears in her head started moving. "Would be nice I think though. Got that metal there that just absorbs all that heat. I'm sure you might be used to it by now but it might be conve...conven...helpful to have something to help. I can at least have a possible sketch, if the creek don't rise."

Catherine would spend the entire day out there in Dúthracht, if only they would let her. Still she can stay close to her Battlemech, just in case. If an emergency arises and they have to sortie immediately. A girl can hope.

Wandering the Hangars to watch the bustling activity of heavy machinery leaving and returning, she comes across two familiar faces. It's her favourite mechtech! The only one, whom she can look in the eye normally. And Kid, who is way too tall for his callsign!

Greeting them both with a wave and smile, she skips closer. "Hey Hrafna! Hey Richard! Heard your fight out there went pretty well. Congratulations!"

"Well, I've been carrying the arm around for seven years now. Accordingly, the model is a bit older and it was broken once," he pointed to a spot on the forearm. A slight weld could be found there. Hrafn would understand that there must have been a lot of tinkering. "The technician who patched it up had cursed almost continuously, but he got it done.... even though the whole thing has a few quirks about it now..."

As Cat came forward he greeted her "Hi Cat! Thanks for that. If the rest of the campaign goes like this, we'll have our money in no time and be on our way. How about you, are you scheduled today? he asked.

"That'd be great, but I suspect we won't have it so easy."

She shrugs and answers him with a bit of a pout. "I'm not scheduled for any of the big fights today. I'm not even allowed to be out there all day, so I have check back in occasion, so that command be sure I am still fresh."

"If only that would mean they acknowledged the heat issues of Dúthracht and give me double heat sinks, but no~! They can't do magic." She ends up complaining with a playful little grin.

Hrafna turned in the direction of the familiar voice. She was pretty good with names and faces, but for some reason she was great with h voices. "Hey now, if it isn't Two Leut Cat. I was just tellin' Richie here about the tradition back home. Hugs and stuff when people come back to let them know they are welcome and safe. You got one of those comin' the next time you go out there."

"Hugs are a great reason to come back safe, Hraf!" The small redhead grins. "I'll gladly take one of these every time I come back from a mission. And a bottle of ice cold water, because Dúthracht can be a real sauna sometimes."

"How hot does the Wolverine get when you Alpha Strike?" he asked "The Vulcan got pretty hot after a jump and an Alpha Strike."

"It gets hot enough after one jumping Alpha Strike, that the targeting systems start to glitch." Catherine explains. "Two jumping Alpha strikes in a row and there is a more than one in four chance that my mech might just shut down on me. And if it doesn't do that, I get a warning signal that letting things get even a tiny bit hotter might make my SRMs just go and decide to explode on me. Kaboom."

With her small notebook still in hand, Hrafna flipped a few pages and made a couple of notes. "Richie, yes. Cat, yes. Good, good. Now if I get to thinkin' about who said a hug was a good thing I can just flip through my notes here and I got my answer." The writing was not in English and looked rather scribbled but it appeared to work for her. With a nod she put the notebook back into her chest pocket but held onto the pen.

"Things still gettin' real hot even in this weather? I woulda thought it would have mit...mitig...reduced that a bit. Hmm...I could look over it for you, but I suppose it's just a mater of how those mechs live and breathe."

"Well, if we ever get hands on double heat sinks we could deal with it better...." he thrwoed in "Even though i doubt that we get one and even if we do they will most likely outfit the assault class ones first with it"

Catherine gives Hrafnhildur a smile and shrugs. "Would have been nice, but Battlemechs are a bit too hot for a little snow. Winter temperature may help, but not enough to be noticed. That is what I noticed out there at least. Real wolverines live in the snow, so I guess makes sense that Battlemech named after them runs hot enough to not be bothered by a little cold either."

"Pretty much what I am thinking too." The young Mechwarrior turns towards Richard. "I would love me a good stack of double heatsinks so much though. So much!" The short tomboy spreads both her arms out as wide as she can.

"If you can get your hands on them, I'll set them up on those mechs of yours. I'm not high up enough in the hire...hire...the ranks to go off asking for too much stuff. But hey now, if those things come across my plate you know for sure I'm wrenchin' them in quick style." She nodded at first but then her face changed. "Oh! Reminds me of when I built that motor cart of mine. Don't have it here with me now but at first the engine got away too hot, had to figure out a way to cool it and keep it small so it didn't take too much room. Yup, just gotta have the right parts."
