Break your way in part 1 (D6 LM Budai Combat)

Your lance is to attack the south western defences of Budai. It's late morning and intercepted communications suggest the enemy are relaxed. They aren't expecting us. Two turrets have been sighted, although one is hidden in the north-east. They're supported by a lance of tanks. While the turrets will be slow coming online, they pose a real threat. Expect their foundations to be reinforced. Destroy the enemy so more Obsidian Angels can penetrate directly into the facility further up in the hills.

Objective: Defeat the enemy.

"Clowder has arrived at designated destination Budai SWD." Catherine reports back to mission command. "Situation appears to match recon. Moving in to attack."

Flipping a few levers, she addresses her lance next.

"Okay guys. All of you connect to my Command module now. Make sure to keep the map situation updated. Do your best. Stay safe. Let's flatten our opponents."

Now first things first: Figure out the wind direction.

The wind was very gentle and ever changing. The dual AC/5 turret on the hill was the opposite. Nearby, an Axel heavy tank was powering up in a dug in position. It had a nasty AC/20. It was backed up by a Hunter with an LRM20, a Bulldog tank with its large turret laser and shorter range weapons, and a standard Striker that appeared to have been reading to depart north.

The enemy remained in position. Somewhere north east was a dual SRM-6 turret according to intelligence. It all needed to be neutralised.

Analysing the situation on approach, Catherine radios her orders. "That Axel up there has an AC-20. Stop out of max range and unload on it." She marks the danger zone on her Command Module and sets the Axel as a primary target.

"Mouse, I sent you a waypoint. You jump over there and try to hit the turret."

The combat starts off slow as Cat encourages her lance to be cautious. The Centurion lands a few LRMs on the Axel, damaging it surprisingly easily (5 damage LS, minor damage, +1 to driving skill rolls, 3 damage LS, moderate damage, +2 to driving skill rolls, -1MP). The Trebuchet contributes an AC/5 to the mix (5 damage to LS). Other weapons fire is ineffective save for Mouse denting the turret (3 damage).

The enemy tanks begin to move to intercept the lance. Even the Axel moves forward to bring its AC/20 to bear.

"Clowder, advance to these positions and unload on the Axel." Catherine loves the command module of her Dúthracht. Putting markers on the map so easily is a real help.

"Wildhog, keep your heat low. Ostrich, warm up. Mouse, jump on the mark and help us with the Axel."

This is hopefully total overkill, but once that Axel is gone, Catherine can jump in with near impunity and go stomp out everything, while her lance mops up the rest.

As Catherine's lance advances they are met by a hail of enemy fire. Most of it misses. A few LRMs smack into the Trebuchet (5 damage LA, CT, 2 damage LA).

Focusing all their fire on the Axel, the group place a lot of shots on target (4 damage TU, 2 damage FR, 5 damage TU, 1 damage LS, moderate damage, +2 to driving skill rolls, -1 MP, 5 damage RR, moderate damage again, 5 damage LS). The heavy tanks is chucking out smoke and making an awful noise, but it was still running...?

The Axel crew lift the hatches and flee. It was definitely still running, but now it was empty. That was the first step of Cat's plan complete. Step two would be harder. Scanners indicated the turrets were now online and it was possible to see the dual barrels moving to aim her way.

"Great job guys!" Catherine cheers when the only truly dangerous opponent is taken out of the fight.

And now that Bulldog is served to her on a silver platter. Well, more of a grassy plain, but the idea is the same.

"Wildhog, hold and unload on my mark. I'll jump there and kick. Ostrich, move fast, new target. Mouse, short hop, new target."

Let's hope that splitting up the firepower for a little works out in their favour now.

Caught off guard for a second time, most of the Militia's fire is a miss. Only a few LRMs hit the Trebuchet. However, it's enough to breach the armour and to damage the mech's hand (5 damage LA, armour destroyed, 6 internal structure remaining, critical hit on hand, 1 damage RL). Was it skill or luck?

At the same time Cat goes to town in her Wolverine. After sailing in the air and landing scant feet to the side of the Bulldog tank, she turns and lands all her shots on the nearby Hunter (5 damage FR, LS, heavy damage, +3 to driving skill rolls, 1/2 MP, 8 damage FR, heavy damage again). Only two SRMs fall short. The Hunter is left beyond heavily damaged. It's a mess.

On the Bulldog, the Centurion and Trebuchet land hits like its a practice range (8 damage FR, 3 damage LS, heavy damage, +3 to driving skill rolls, 1/2 MP, 10 damage FR, 5 damage TU). Cat follows up with a nasty kick into its left side (11 damage LS).

The less skilled Mouse misses her shots.

Despite the odds the Militia vehicles were hanging in there. Neither the Hunter nor the Bulldog were quite crippled. Each was surely close.

The Bulldog lurched forward as the other vehicles remained in place.

"Ostrich! Stop blocking shots with your hand! How are you even doing that?" Catherine laughs over the radio. The fight is going well and she is in high spirits.

"Wildhog, step up and fire. LRMs on secondary. Ostrich back up a bit and keep firing. Mouse, hop back again and split your fire. We'll make a proper jumper out of you yet."

After giving and marking her orders, she engages the jump jets of her Wolverine to land nearly on top of the Striker. Time to give it a good stomp!

Both sides fire much more fiercely at one another now, with weapons ranged in. The Centurion takes the brunt of it (5 damage RL, CT, 3 damage LT, 5 damage CT, RA, 2 damage LL). After a few seconds it would topple over, although the pilot controlled the fall enough to prevent injury (5 damage RA). The Wolverine is pinged by a few SRMs from the SRM turret (2 damage CT, LT, LA, 4 damage RT) while the Hornet is hit from a few fired by the Bulldog (2 damage RL, RT, RA, LT, LA). The only mech that avoids another scratch is the Trebuchet.

Cat's team dish out worse than they get however. Cat herself immobilises the Hunter before Mouse takes out its engine anyway. It was a sitting duck. The Bulldog is hit by the Centurion, but it is Ostrich who immobilises it with an AC/5 round. To round things out, Cat gives the Striker a heavy kick to the turret (11 damage TU). It somehow remains in the fight.

The crews of the Bulldog and Hunter leave their vehicles with their hands up. The Striker reverses away from the carnage. Things were looking positive. The main threat now was the dual AC/5 turret. The dual SRM-6 turret was only a threat if you drew in close, as Cat was doing.

"Hmpf!" Ostrich responds, a sign she sees the battle as good as won. "Better my hand, than falling flat on my butt like that."

"Harhar." Wildhog's gruff voice comes good naturedly over the radio. His skin is thick enough to take the teasing. His recklessness has often enough earned him some.

"We're nearly done here." Catherine interjects. "Let's mop up the rest here and we can go back home to celebrate our victory."

Three different voices answer her.
"Roger."
"Roger."
"R-roger."

The targets are set. All three of her lancies are fully assigned to the AC-5 turret. Hellcat gives herself a slightly more complicated job.

The AC/5 turret crew continued to focus the Centurion, double tapping its right leg (10 damage RL). On the other hand they have to endure a plethora of attacks. The turret emplacement shakes from all the impacts (16 damage). Meanwhile Cat scorches the side of the Striker with repeated laser attacks (13 damage LS, moderate damage, +2 to driving skill rolls, -1 MP).

A little more of this and the defenders would be done!

(Wolverine and Trebuchet on 7 heat, Centurion on 1)

The Striker swings back around to try to hit Cat with its SRMs. That was about all it could do at this stage.

"Let's quickly slug it out!" Catherine commands. "Everyone hold and unload. Ostrich, slow advance, skirt the SRM and throw some hot pepper."

Nothing more needs to be said, really. Everyone knows what to do. There will be some hits coming in, but this should take the last two targets out easily.

Cat and Richter destroy the Striker as the Trebuchet and Centurion take a little more damage. The last turret is, thankfully silenced. The building crumbles apart under continued assault. Ostrich's mech is radiating heat by this point. It was an absolute sauna inside.

With the last turret out of range of doing anything, Catherine turns on her speakers and demands surrender. The gun crew reluctantly comply after a warning shot from Ostrich's PPC.

(All enemies eliminated! Congratulations!)

The Axel, Bulldog and Hunter could all be salvaged. Much of the weaponry of the Striker could be as well. Combined with the SRM6 launchers and ammunition, it would be a valuable combat. Only the Trebuchet had any real damage to speak of, and none of that strictly impeded its ability to fight.

Lakshmi's lance arrive to push the attack after being delayed by a few hover APCs carrying infantry to reinforce the perimeter. Catherine's lance is sent back to headquarter for repair and rearming as some ground troops arrive to secure the prisoners.

(Trebuchet will be undergoing repairs day 7&8. It will be available again for combat on day 9)

"You made me boil in my own sweat again, Hellcat." Ostrich lets off some steam.

"That's boiling?" A gruff voice interjects with a laugh. "Come back when you've burned out a sim pod heater!"

"Better hot than shot!" Catherine throws in. "Good job guys! We only took minor damage and three of those tanks look good enough for our car park. Let's finish the day and have some drinks later. I'm gonna get a bonus from this, so they'll be on me."

Suffering the cheers with a smile, Catherine greets the passing Lakshmi with a wave. "Good Luck, Kestrel!"

Back home the Clowder trots. All under their own power and with only some scratches. Except for the Trebuchet's broken left hand.

"Really, Ostrich, do we need to get you a shield to carry?"

Bantering on a post combat high all the way.
